First African American Physician in Ocala, Florida
Dr. Thomas Playfair Lloyd was the first African American doctor in Ocala. Suwannee County native Thomas P. Lloyd practiced medicine in Ocala from 1889 until his death in 1896.
Dr. Thomas P. Lloyd was born May 18, 1868 in Live Oak, Florida. He graduated from the Leonard Medical School of Shaw University in 1889. Lloyd graduated second in his class.
Dr. Lloyd married Carrie Augusta Onley on September 2, 1892. They had one child, Pauline Victoria. Mrs. Lloyd died in 1949.
Dr. Lloyd practiced medicine in Ocala starting in 1889. He had an office at the corner of Pond and Broadway Street for several years. He also ran a drugstore. Dr. Lloyd was a member of the Methodist Church. He was also a Odd Fellow. He died on December 13, 1896 and was buried in Chestnut Cemetery.
Ed. note: Dr. Lloyd was Deputy Grand Master of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows for African Americans in Florida at the time of his death.
