Customer came in for an oil change today. As I’m writing up the order they explicitly stated that they do not wan’t to be “Upsold” any useless services. “Don’t try and sell me no air filter, cabin air filter, transmission flush…” That’s not completely out of the ordinary. Some people just want their oil changed and out of here as soon as possible. Problem is when we got their car on the lift I saw that one of the tires was completely messed up beyond what is safe to drive on.
The wheel wasn’t much better. I tried explaining to them how unsafe driving on this tire would be. I also strongly suggested they at least take a look at what I was talking about before deciding to not do anything about it. They refused. I had to have them sign a release of liability that our shop stated their car was unsafe to leave the premises and that they were aware of the danger. Because of the condition of the tire and that I was genuinely concerned for their safety, I offered them a new steel wheel and tire at cost. I even offered to waive the costs of labor. Nope not this customer, “I only want my oil changed.”
Not all mechanics are out here trying to drive up prices and perform useless repair work. Some of us genuinely do care about our customers and providing them with excellent service. I hope they made it safely to their next destination…
