RESPONSE

My sister in law told me her cousins in North Carolina got a winter coat for their dog when it snowed. A caring gesture, but they had a SAINT BERNARD.

RESPONSE

We use to have a Samoyed. The neighbors called the ASPCA and complained when the saw her out laying across a snow drift. They called a lot. The agent they sent to investigate told us they were more worried about the seemingly crazy neighbor than the dog.

RESPONSE

I remember thinking as a kid that my cat and dog would always get cold during the winters so I would always try to force them into bed with me so I can cover them with my blankets. One was a part husky part wolf breed. And my cat always attacked me. I was not a smart kid.

RESPONSE

damn that’s a cold ass husky

RESPONSE

It is also wearing a wolf on its noggin.

RESPONSE

Nice.

RESPONSE

Shit, it was only ninety-nine cents!

RESPONSE

Neighbor – “It’s too cold for your dog to be outside!”

You – “Yeah, that’s how my Grandmother died.”

Neighbor – “From being left out in the cold?”

You – “No, from not minding her own fucking business.”

RESPONSE

Last winter I tied my Siberian husky with about thirty feet of line to a tree in my front yard while I shoveled the driveway. My neighbors did this really passive aggressive bullshit where they stood by their door almost out of earshot and said things like “he better not be leaving that dog out there tied up in the snow”.

She’s only tied up because if I don’t, it’s a two hour marathon chasing her around the yard in the snow, because she will refuse to go inside. If I leave her in while I’m outside in the snow she sits at the front window and cries.

But out of all that, what baffles me the most is, it’s ok for a human from a moderately hot climate to be outside for hours shoveling snow, but an animal bred in Siberia has to be inside.

RESPONSE

Do your neighbors bring all of the neighborhood coyotes and raccoons inside to sleep with them?

RESPONSE

Our Great Pyr is the same way. Last year during one of the Polar Vortex spells, it got down to -35 degrees – the damn dog STILL refused to come inside.

RESPONSE

Your neighbors are idiots… It’s not hard to figure out that a SIBERIAN husky likes the cold.

RESPONSE

Other breeds merely adopted the snow; Huskies are born in it, moulded by it. They don’t see the grass until July.

RESPONSE

Is reddit your Job? cause you are everywhere Oo

RESPONSE

I had a husky/wolf hybrid — when it snowed, he got so ridiculously happy.

RESPONSE

We used to have a Finnish Lapphund. In the spring she would find every last small spot of snow left just to go roll around in it.

RESPONSE

Our Finnish Lapphund is 17. She’s deaf, half blind and has arthritis… But when it snows, she’s a puppy again!

RESPONSE

Hey! When my dog passes (probably a good six to seven years) I want to get a Finnish lapphund. I live in northern bc in Canada and he loves to ice fish so I think it would be a good match. I’m also the master at dethatching/grooming spitz dogs. Can you tell me more about your dog?

RESPONSE

Hell, my Aussie mix gets delirious when it snows. He starts wiggling and whining at the door wanting out, and then will spend a glorious half hour chasing snowballs. Then he comes inside and promptly jumps up on my bed with dirty, wet feet in order to warm back up.

Stupid/silly dog.

RESPONSE

I had a husky/wolf hybrid

you and every other kid in 5th grade had a part “wolf” dog

RESPONSE

You didn’t have a wolf hybrid, sorry to say.

They make terrible pets. They’re shy and aggressive, and shit and piss EVERYWHERE to mark their territory in the house.

What you had was a husky, or possibly a mix with another Spitz breed.

Every kid that’s ever had a husky or malamute claimed their dog was part wolf. The reality is that it’s not true.

RESPONSE

My neighbors have huskies. I’ve got not problem with them staying out when it is cold. I just get kind of annoyed when they are out an it is 100+

RESPONSE

My Husky loves to sit out in the sun in the summer. Their fur works both ways apparently.

RESPONSE

A friendly reminder from the American Veterinary Medical Association:

Cats and dogs should be kept inside during cold weather. It’s a common belief that dogs and cats are more resistant than people to cold weather because of their fur, but it’s untrue. Like people, cats and dogs are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia and should be kept inside. Longer-haired and thick-coated dog breeds, such as huskies and other dogs bred for colder climates, are more tolerant of cold weather; but no pet should be left outside for long periods of time in below-freezing weather.

There is a difference between leaving them outside and them choosing to be outside.

RESPONSE

Your neighbours are crazy. Dogs are bred for different environments. A husky in the snow is just as natural as a Chihuahua in the heat. Of course within reason for both cases.

True abuse is when you see someone in Fla buy a husky and wonder why it’s so lazy. Or an Alaskan with a Chihuahua wonder why their dog shakes so much.

RESPONSE

To be fair, the chihuahua is always shaking. Cold or otherwise.

RESPONSE

I had two huskies growing up. I got an anonymous not in the door one day when I was home from school about how it was “cruel to have [my] dogs cry and whine in the cold while [I] sat inside a warm house”. That person obviously didn’t see the 15 times I let them inside for all of 5 minutes before they started panting, overheating and scratching or whining at the door to be let out. They didn’t care about the cold they just wanted to be with me, but fuck me if I was going to spend another 2 hours out in -30C with them.

RESPONSE

While this person was not particularly observant and did not bother to do some research before passing judgement, at least they were well-behaved enough to simply drop you a note instead of reporting you for animal cruelty or something.

RESPONSE

My dog is the exact same, she loves to go outside during storms because she loves the feeling of the wind on her face, like all dogs.

I live in a pretty stormy area so its not uncommon to have storm warnings and the police going door to door making sure we all know shitty weather is coming tonight, my dog doesn’t give a shit and loves to go outside anyway.

She whimpers to go outside and then whimpers to get me to go out with her, not a chance I’m going out in that shit just to stand beside her as she bathes in the wind.

I watch from the window, give her an hour or two and then I bring her in.

She also does the same when its time for a piss, she only takes a piss if I’m standing beside her, otherwise she just sits still in front of the door.

Dogs are weird.
