First, hope and pray it is female.

If it’s male, you only get minuscule THC.

The buds will happen on their own when the timing is right in the late summer/early autumn. Your job is to keep it alive until then.

These things can be voracious growers. They need a ton of water daily.

Your next threat is mold. Start cutting fan leaves as soon as buds develop. Keep trimming fan leaves all autumn so that air can circulate. Your plant will get some mold. Even if you can’t see it. Your goal is to minimize mold.

The plants will go through a lot of nutrients in the final stages of their life. But be careful and don’t over fertilize. That can be disastrous. It’s much easier to plant your cannabis into rich compost or year-old manure. This will release nutrients slowly over the season.

After harvest, mold is your number 1 threat. You need to find somewhere to dry them. And it will stink up the whole neighbourhood as you do it.

Weed out the male plants before budding or you get seeds.

the hairs are the real indicator. And males will make MANY of those fennel seed pods…the male sexual part. Females will usually have fewer calyx with the hairs coming out…that whispy hair is the giveaway. When they bloom the tops look different on males too..kind of prickly like a pine cone…females have a more feathery top.the hairs are the real indicator. My dad grew some weed a while back, and I picked a couple buds to hopefully smoke the next day before I flew back home. I had no time to dry it… trying to smoke it fresh is supposedly possible but I couldn’t get it to burn at all even with a butane torch. Sad day. Always dry your weed.

You could have popped the buds into a 120–180 degree oven and had it ready to smoke within a few hours. This is NOT optimum but will do the job in a pinch.

Do you live in a rain forest. Why do you get mould.

I would leave the fan leaves as they gather the light to sustain the buds.

I would leave all the leaves and run a fan on the plants. If outdoors. The wind will take care of that.

Fair enough. I’m overly cautious about health and safety after a few mistakes ruined my crops.

We are fairly humid in my part of Canada. And we leave the plants outside until first frost warning in October. It can get quite damp, especially in the morning dew. And when it’s cold, that moisture doesn’t evaporate.

Spores are everywhere. Some commercial growers test every plant for biological agents.

I’ve had what looked like healthy plants, but ended up with mould after processing. I think my drying methods were sub-par. But the spores were picked up in the field.

Shake em bud! The dry/cure process is crucial as well tho. I prefer a fast dry myself, I put a oscillating fan on low and make sure that every branch rustles when the fan passes it. It not, adjust or add more fans. Wil be dry enough to cure in about 2 days. After that, be Dillinger in “burping” your jars. 2–3 times a day for the first 2 weeks, then every day for the next 2–3 weeks, then at least once a week for the next month. good luck!

If you want to produce large buds, you need to clean the plant as much as possible from “spaghetti” branches and leaves. This will promote air circulation and will give your plant more sun light to the inside. The plant should be “nuked” two feet from the ground. Yellow leaves will retain water and have to be removed with all large leaves. A week before harvest you should remove all leaves from plant, in order to fill up the buds, It will help drying toughly and you will have less mold.

Yes, I’m definitely an advocate of clipping spaghetti branches going into bloom (I use them for clones on next cycle), and “lollipoping” the plant (ie stripping everything but the canopy) does make the crown buds grow nice and big. I like to leave the leaves on throughout tho, the plant cannibalizes itself (some nutrients are “mobile” nutes) and when the leaves go yellow it’s because the plant is sucking them dry of nutes. I’ve done side by side comparisons, same strain and clones to boot so genetically identical… the one that was stripped of leaves gave about 30% LESS flower. Only thing that makes sense to me regarding that is the plant uses the leaves to feed the bud sites (sugar leaves don’t photosynthesis as much) and the cannibalization of the fan leaves gives nutes that doesn’t need to be altered for consumption. to each their own really, clipping leaves does promote air flow and thus decrease risk of mold… but be weary, it comes at a cost of harvest size. Novice growers without great growing habits (shaking every morn, watering roots only, tarping them overnight, etc) should probably clip the leaves so they don’t lose the crop altogether? The key is being diligent tho. If your going to do something, do it to the best of your abilities.

Budding begins in earnest when the days are half light/half dark. 12 hours of darkness will get them budding whether you’re growing inside or out.

Outside it begins at about 13 1/2 hours of light or less (Aug 10 around here) Very dependent on strain too.

So, this post is unnecessarily negative and deceptive. You do not have to start trimming fan leaves and continue trimming fan leaves. In fact, those fan leaves are what are feeding the plant. That’s why they’re there. Unless it wilts them, leave them. In fact to a large degree, leave your plant alone. You’re doing just fine.

Give it good water every other day and it won’t mold. When it’s ready to come down, hang it in your closet for a couple of days, and it won’t mold. After you trim it up and put the buds in a container to cure, stir them a few times a day and let them get air, and they won’t mold. They’ll do just fine.

There are plenty of videos on Youtube on how to water, grow, and dry your plant. This person is making it sound like some scientific, calculated thing. It’s just a plant. And, it just needs light and water.

Seriously. You’re already doing great or you wouldn’t have called it “relatively big.” It will flower when it’s ready. You’ll be able to tell when it’s ready to come down when the little hairs on the flower turn orange, and the trichomes (crystals) are no longer clear, and are shaped like a mushroom. They get a ball on the top. You’ll want to see some orange or pink in them. The rest of the plant will change color, as well. The leaves will turn a sort of yellow and those fan leaves this person is so concerned about will be your biggest indicator. They give you the most information about how your plant is doing.

Don’t forget to wear gloves. The resin is a pain in the ass to get off your hands and everything else you touch. You’ll also be very fragrant after hanging out with your plant friend. So, don’t go out talking to it (you should talk to it) and then run straight to work. You’ll smell amazing, but it’s not everyone’s favorite scent.

It’s ridiculously easy to grow assuming you’re no more than just an average gardener, like me. It’s not called weed for nothing..

I taught myself off www.Leafly.com

  • Full sun
  • Male plants give great crop, but the seeds are a nuisance. Female plants obviously dont have this problem
  • Knowing when to harvest: – 60–70 % of the “hair” has turned brown. Under strong magnification the pistals, i.e. the super tiny little mushroom shaped nodes on the heads and leaves turned opaque from being crystal clear. (If they have turned yellowish by the time you harvest, you will harvest CBD instead of THC. It’ still ok, just not as good as a week earlier when you should have harvested)
  • Trimming off leaves and Curing your harvest: This is where you spend your time. Good curing ensure a smooth smoke. Dont skimp !!

Go read up and have fun!

Accurate re curing! Take your time and do it right… or it’ll smell and taste like hay!

I disagree with the trichome (not pistel, the pistel is the hair. The mushroom thingy is the trichome) colouration tho. If you harvest with 75% amber and just as you notice the big mushrooms keeling over looking like a 9, that ish will def give you couchlock. The less amber you have, and thus more milky white, the more energetic buzz you get.

I Taylor make my harvests to have a work weed and after work weed. Harvesting with 20–30% amber (no 9s) and 70–80% milky gives a more upbeat creative buzz. The other I wait about a week or two until I see the majority amber and the first 9s, that ish knocks you out like a true indica. Same plant, both clones, different buzz and burnout (or lack thereof).

More amber and some 9s is better for pain management. As the thc production stops (as they keel over, that’s when thc stops) another chem starts to increase and it’s this chem that causes sleepiness. But it’s also the combo of both along with higher cbd levels that actually melts away the pain. Also helps sleep disorders (I have a hard time falling asleep)… but keep in mind you need a longer resting period of falling asleep high. Your brain needs to sober up before it can go in to REM sleep.

More milky trichs than amber is great for staying active and getting creative (I’m a painter), helps with appetite (I find more so than other, but the first still gives the munchies for sure) and doesn’t give the couchlock burnout.

happy harvesting folks!

What “crop” are you getting from male plants?

I’m not a fan of clipping fan leaves during bloom. The plant uses the leaves to photosynthesize, so removing them only harms the final product.

Personally, every morning I go to the garden and water the ROOTS ONLY! And give the entire plant a vigorous shake to get the majority of sitting water from dew off of it. Best bet is to tarp the thing and keep dew off it entirely if feasible.

On another note: milk does a fantastic job of getting rid of white powder mildew (mold)

What happens if I dry them by putting the buds in an airtight container along with silica gel?

You ruin it. Dry it on the stalks in a cold room with a dehumidifier/air conditioner

when the stalks start to snap instead of bend between the buds it’s ready. About a week or 2 depending on your local climate

the trick is to dry it slowly but quickly enough to avoid any mild or decomposition

James Cloutier

I’d also add that not every branch is created equal. The big ones, the outside will be crispy af before the stem “snaps”. Typically I just wait till it feels nice and dry then pop it into the jars and burp religiously! 3 times a day for the first few weeks! This ensures that the outside and inside are same dampness (?), that is to say they’re evenly dried and same inside and out.
