Sakir Everett, an 11-year-old African American boy from Lansing, Michigan, who bravely disarmed a classmate with a gun, has been expelled from his school. Instead of being celebrated as a hero, he now faces a year away from the classroom.

The incident took place back in May at Dwight Rich School of the Arts. Sakir spotted another student carrying a firearm, took it from him, and removed the bullets to keep everyone safe. His mother, Savitra McClurkin, said he chose not to alert staff because he didn’t want his classmate punished, though he understood guns had no place in school.

Despite his actions, school officials accused Sakir of weapons possession and expelled him for the entire academic year. His mom says the decision was unfair, noting her son had never been in trouble and consistently earned A and B grades.

“It’s devastating because he’s a bright kid and all he wants to do is be a kid,” she told the New York Post. “As a parent, I feel like I may be more devastated than him.”

Sakir credited his hunting background for teaching him gun safety. That knowledge allowed him to take the firearm apart and prevent harm before adults intervened.

Since his expulsion, Sakir has been confined to his home. His mother has reduced her work hours to care for him while he studies through a non-accredited online program. She said the district offered no alternatives or support for his education.

“They are setting my son up for failure,” McClurkin said. “They’re setting him up to being a statistic, and I’ve been doing everything in my will and my power to keep him from that.”

At a recent school board meeting, she pleaded for her son’s reinstatement but received no response. It also remains unclear whether the student who brought the gun to school faced disciplinary action.

GoFundMe campaign has since been launched to help the family manage financial strain. The page describes Sakir as a boy who acted out of courage and love for his classmates, “preventing what could have been an unimaginable tragedy.”

“Instead of being recognized as a hero, Sakir is now being treated like a criminal. He has been expelled and barred from all school platforms,” it read.

The school district has said it will review Sakir’s status after the academic year. Until then, his future in education remains uncertain.
