Sakir Everett, an 11-year-old African American boy from Lansing, Michigan, who bravely disarmed a classmate with a gun, has been expelled from his school. Instead of being celebrated as a hero, he now faces a year away from the classroom.
Despite his actions, school officials accused Sakir of weapons possession and expelled him for the entire academic year. His mom says the decision was unfair, noting her son had never been in trouble and consistently earned A and B grades.
“It’s devastating because he’s a bright kid and all he wants to do is be a kid,” she told the New York Post. “As a parent, I feel like I may be more devastated than him.”
Since his expulsion, Sakir has been confined to his home. His mother has reduced her work hours to care for him while he studies through a non-accredited online program. She said the district offered no alternatives or support for his education.
“They are setting my son up for failure,” McClurkin said. “They’re setting him up to being a statistic, and I’ve been doing everything in my will and my power to keep him from that.”
A GoFundMe campaign has since been launched to help the family manage financial strain. The page describes Sakir as a boy who acted out of courage and love for his classmates, “preventing what could have been an unimaginable tragedy.”
“Instead of being recognized as a hero, Sakir is now being treated like a criminal. He has been expelled and barred from all school platforms,” it read.
