The world’s first trillionaire, Elon Musk, has dumped more than $276 million into the 2026 midterm elections since July, making him the single biggest known individual donor in the entire election cycle. Every dollar of that spending has flowed exclusively to Republican causes and candidates. Just last May, Musk claimed he would cut back on political spending, saying “I think I’ve done enough.” It turns out the richest man on Earth was just taking a breather before opening the floodgates.
A staggering $158 million went to the Senate Leadership Fund, the main Republican Senate super PAC, marking one of the largest single political donations in modern American history. Another $76 million went to his own America PAC, which is ramping up door-to-door canvassing operations across battleground states just as it did in the 2024 cycle. An additional $10 million went to a PAC backing Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in his closely watched re-election fight.
The historic spending spree comes as Republicans head into the final stretch of the midterms facing significant headwinds, with Democrats’ odds of taking back both the House and Senate steadily improving by the week. Musk is writing massive personal checks to bail out the GOP’s congressional prospects. No Democratic billionaire is spending anywhere near this scale of money to influence the election outcome.
The timing has raised widespread scrutiny and ethical questions: just days before the spending numbers broke, Donald Trump awarded Musk the National Medal of Science at a White House ceremony. A man worth roughly a trillion dollars is spending a quarter of a billion dollars to control who runs Congress. He wouldn’t waste a single dime if your individual ballot didn’t carry real weight in the outcome.
He can blanket the airwaves with ads, flood mailboxes with flyers, and pay armies of canvassers to knock on doors. But he cannot step into a voting booth and cast your ballot for you. Make a concrete plan to vote this election, confirm your registration ahead of time, and share this message with someone who needs to hear it.
